Things to Consider when Traveling with Vape Pens

Most airlines allow Vape Pens to be taken on-board in your carry-on luggage, but it’s most useful to check with the airline before you travel.

It’s not usually a problem taking small bottles of e-liquid on planes as it falls under the 100 ml liquid limit. You need to place the e-liquid in a clear ziplock bag alongside your other liquids. If you have big bottles of e-liquid, you should put them in your hold luggage.

Can I put my Vape in checked luggage?

Vaping batteries are now banned worldwide in checked luggage, so all cells must now be placed in hand luggage.

Can I charge my Vape on the plane?

You are no longer allowed to charge Vaping devices on the plane.

Can I take an e-juice on the plane?

On most airlines, you can take a small amount of e-liquid in carrying on luggage (as with other e-liquids, this has to be carried in a single, transparent, resealable bag). More copious amounts need to be taken in hold luggage.

Using Vapes on Planes

Forget it! The only airline I know that allows you to use anything resembling a Vape is Ryan Air – even then, you can’t use your design, but you can buy a smokeless cigarette on board and use it.

QatarAirways– people have been arrested and had jail time for using vape pens on their planes.

British Airways have recently banned the sale of vape pens on flights to Qatar, Oman, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE, due to local regulations (which resulted in one of their crew members being detained and interrogated after being stopped at the border with Vape pen).

A note for rebels – while vaping does not usually set off fire alarms in, say, an aeroplane toilet, it can and has happened. It isn’t something we can recommend.

Using Vapes in Airports

Things seem to be going backwards here, with many airports now not allowing vaping (although you can usually get away with it in smoking areas in countries where vaping is legal). Heathrow did use to have a vaping room, but they now only consider selected smoking areas on their website.

Some of the time, you may be requested to use your Vape pen in the smoking zone. The V2 blog points out that there is no blanket ban on (US) airports on using Vapes, but this is likely to vary from airport to airport, so it’s best to check before you vape.

Going Through Security With Vaping Supplies

Yet, except for Dubai, you are unlikely to have this problem when going through airport security in any country where Vapes are well known and used. Please note that many people have told us that their Vape pens have been confiscated by Dubai airport security. It has included during transit and departure.

Do make sure that your battery charged and can be switched on as this may be required.

Can I take my Vape pens through transit in a country where it is forbidden?

In general, based on both our own experiences and feedback from readers, it not a problem to take an electronic cigarette through an airport in a country where Vapes are banned. Yet, if in doubt, check with your airline.

Where can you legally vape?

Again, things are more hopeful here. While Vapes has been banned in several countries, most bans focus on sellers rather than users.

Yet, some countries are more extreme. Singapore, for example, levies a hefty fine for anyone using Vape pens before. Good to hear the country is now more relaxed about travellers vaping. Several states in the US have also halted their use in parks or public places.

In Hong Kong, Tobacco Asia notes that nicotine-based Vape pens and liquids are completely banned and could get you a hefty fine.

Before You Travel

It’s a good idea to detach batteries from cartridges, turn off any manual batteries and take out removable batteries from the mod.

Should I take my e-liquid?

Make sure you have a big supply of e-liquid, as you may have trouble to buy e-liquid in the country you are visiting. You may also find that foreign suppliers do not match your own supplier’s testing regime!

Dealing with Attitudes

Remember, vaping may not be as well-popular as it is here. Attitudes may also have been influenced by the low standards of reporting in some countries. There’s a big chance the local smoke market spin doctors will have been at work too. So be calm – and make sure you are loaded with the facts. You may also notice that people get quite annoyed.

Enjoy your Trip

Finally, enjoy your trip – and don’t forget to send us a photo of you lounging in your hammock with a cocktail in one hand and your hookah pen in the other!

In cases where the law has been listed as unclear, you should continue with caution when taking your e-cigarette and any nicotine refills. It is important to note that even if Vapes is legal in a country, there may be a lack of stores from which to buy refills, so stock up before you go!
